Oar d'oeuvre: Theme restaurants shouldn't be this good!
Written by bluecamper on November 18, 2004 at Virtualtourist.com.

In a terrific, newly restored building in downtown Red Wing. The theme is nautical (the "Oar" in Oar d'oeuvre) but it's hip, not scary. On the night we went, they played Sinatra and I had a great blue martini. The menu is half appetizers--you can order a few and make the meal. But there were some great sounding entree specials as well. We had a sampler of kalamata olives, marinated cold shrimp, gourmet cheese spread with crostini bread and some beef skewers with a fruity dip.
The dinner was delicious but the dessert was to die for. There are at least a dozen alcoholic coffees on the menu. Pick your favorite and pray that the day's dessert is bread pudding. It was the best I've ever had or I wouldn't be writing this review. So good, really. I wanted to stay the next day for lunch.

My family and I recently got to enjoy eating at your establishment- we were on the Mississippi Queen and we thoroughly enjoyed shopping in town and especially eating soup and dessert at your place. The dessert was like no other! Keep up the good work! We look forward to our next visit to Red Wing.

My friend and I came there for dinner last night and it was fabulous. I can't say enough. The Cajun Pork cutlet, the salad dressings, and the wonderful peanut butter chocolate cake. And after a day of shopping the atmosphere was so inviting. :-) We need one in the twin cities............. Deb P.

Keeping in mind that Wisconsin has a "pay on contact" law for speeding tickets, we slowly drove into Red Wing to locate the Oar d'oeuvre restaurant. Nick Anderson at Rush River had advised us this restaurant and beverage bar serves their microbrews and since, in my opinion, you can never drink too much of a good thing, this was clearly our only choice for lunch… We found the Oar d'oeuvre easily, and settled in for a surprisingly delightful meal. The restaurant specializes in fresh food, great wines and spirits, and offers diners an ever-changing menu, serving lunch and dinner six days a week. The focus of the menu is on their numerous house specialties, their unique signature hors d'oeuvres, which include the "Capsized" artichoke and prosciutto gratin baked with Swiss and Asiago cheeses, topped with toasted almonds and served with crostinis, and the "Scuttlebutt" savory green chili cheesecake topped with mango salsa and served with blue corn tortilla chips… There is also homemade pâté, grilled beef or chicken skewers, spicy shrimp, and an olive and tomato tempanade, to name a few…it all sounded too fabulous. After ordering an ice cold tankard of Rush River BubbleJack IPA, I determined the healthiest choice for me would be the special Philly Cheese Steak sandwich, and my partners in crime sampled the sliced pear and candied pecan salad, as well as a Cajun pork cutlet melt and a gourmet burger…all were fabulous. Chef/Proprietor Marie Mikel visited our table, and we learned that she is on her third and final career change - we wish her much success in this exciting new venture. Marie attempts to source local ingredients as much as she can, and we roared when she told us she sends her kids to the farmers' markets up in the Cities, and "do ya think they can figure out what basil looks like - no!" The Oar d'oeuvre has a calendar of events printed up for 2005, and after perusing it I determined that I may have to temporarily relocate to Red Wing in order to enjoy "Something Different Nights." These are offered once a month, and usually include a six-course dinner paired with a different wine or beer tasting… Marie had just done a tasting night with Rush River's brews, where each course included beer in its ingredients, such as beer in the vinaigrette, beer in the BBQ sauce, beef beer stew, etc… In August they will celebrate their one-year anniversary, and I would advise you to get thee to Red Wing for this party!

Oar d'oeuvre: Classy but casual place. Great food.

Classy but casual restaurant located in a restored 1865 building. Everything from burgers to filet mignon. Beautiful mahogany interior. Outdoor dining overlooking a waterfall and landscaped gardens. Extensive list of gourmet hors  d'oeuvres adds variety to the menu. Their tap beers are from a microbrewery in nearby Maiden Rock, WI and they're some of the best I've tasted.

Very cozy restaurant , nicely decorated with a nautical motif. The food and service were excellent. A lot on the menu to select from. The gourmet hors d'oeuvres are enough for a meal by themselves. Beautiful bar area with a good wine selection. We'll be back this summer to enjoy the outdoor dining that overlooks a waterfall.

From the February 2006 edition of Minnesota Monthly

You can’t escape the puns at the nautically themed
Oar d’oeuvre, but the food is worth a few groan-inducing moments. Starters range from the Seaworthy (spicy shrimp) to the Yacht to Try It (sweet onion dip with crostini). You’ll be shore to love the build-your-own pasta and the raspberry chicken-breast sandwich—no doubt a-boat it.

My husband and I visited Red Wing a few weeks ago and fell upon this great restaurant that is located across the street for the YMCA in the Chambers of Commerce building, I was sure glad that we did.
Our evening started out with wine which they have a great variety of and an affordable selection. We then progressed onto 2 from the delicious array of hors d'oeuvres – ‘capsized’, an artichoke and prosciutto gratin served with crostini toasts and also the ‘Knot your Regular Mushroom”, a large portabella mushroom stuffed with either an italian sausage or vegetable topping. I was delighted with both of these horsdoeuvre’s and so was my husband. They were a welcome alternative from the normal nachos horsdoeuvre most places serve.
For dinner I had the Candied Pecan and Pear salad that was both gorgeous and tasty especially with the fresh gorgonzola cheese. My husband had one of their nightly entrees which change weekly, a beef tenderloin that was cooked to his request and pleased him enough to not want to share.
For dessert we had to try the homemade chocolate peanut butter cake that the waitress raved about, and it was totally worth the indulge.
I definitely would recommend this restaurant to anyone for lunch or dinner and we have already planned to go back.
